Our itinerary balances adventure and relaxation, ensuring there’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Get ready for an unforgettable journey filled with memories that will last a lifetime in one of our favourite destinations.

Day 1: Explore Funchal

Select one or more of the activities around Funchal based on your arrival and departure times. This itinerary allocates additional time on the last days for any remaining activities.

  • Whale and Dolphin Tour: Start your day with an exciting whale and dolphin tour. It’s a fantastic way to introduce kids to marine life.
  • Visit the Main Square: Wander around Funchal’s main square and enjoy the local architecture and atmosphere.
  • Visit the Funchal Cable Car: Take a ride up to Monte for stunning views of the city and coastline. Astor could’nt stop talking about the “teleferico”.
  • Monte Palace Tropical Garden: Explore the beautiful gardens where you think you are in Japan for a moment.
  • Christo rei viewpoint: its said to have formed the inspiration of the Brazilian one.

Day 2: Levada Alecrim and Lagoa do Vento

Instead of doing the 25 fontes trail, Enjoy a less crowded hike on the Levada Alecrim trail in the same area. Make a detour to Lagoa do Vento, an 80m high waterfall and have a picnic by the picturesque waterfall, a perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature.

Cool off and go for a swim in the afternoon at one of the beaches or in one of the natural pools.

Day 3: Pico Arieiro and Relaxation

Depending on your child’s age, you can opt for the Pico to Pico hike for a full day of adventure. We chose to visit the Vereda Balcões viewpoint and then hiked to the first viewpoint, Ninho da Manta, at Pico Arieiro for breathtaking views. After the hike, we headed back and enjoyed a relaxing picnic while watching the sunset.

Day 4: Seixal Beach Day

Start with breakfast at Snack-Bar Avista Navios, which offers a beautiful view over Seixal. Spend a relaxing day at Seixal Beach, with its Hawaiian feel and stunning black sand.

On your way, stop at Miradouro do Véu da Noiva for breathtaking views of the waterfall cascading into the ocean. Get another epic viewpoint by exploring the lush, scenic valley of São Vicente.

Climb the stairs to the charming chapel of Capelinha de Nossa Senhora de Fátima and enjoy the view.

Day 5: Caldeirão Verde Hike and Santana

Embark on a scenic hike to Caldeirão Verde, known for its lush landscapes and impressive waterfall. After the hike, enjoy a traditional Madeiran lunch in Santana, and explore the charming, colorful traditional houses of Santana.

Day 6: Fanal Forest and Porto Moniz

Start early to explore the mystical laurel forest of Fanal, perfect for a peaceful morning walk. Given you are at a 1100m elevation, you are most of the time in or above the clouds with gives it an extra magical feeling!

Afterwards, take a refreshing dip in the natural pools of Porto Moniz. Stop at the Ribeira da Janela viewpoint for panoramic views of the rugged coastline. There is a small pool for children.

Day 7: Western Madeira

Visit the unique Cascata dos Anjos waterfall that flows over the road, a fun sight for kids. Walk to the hidden viewpoint Miradouro do Paredão for breathtaking views, and grab a fresh banana from a self-service point on your way. Take a walk up the hill on the Vereda do Nagueiro (Banana Route) for stunning views over the banana plantations that stretch to the sea.

Afterwards, you can go to the sandbeach in Calheta.

Day 8: Hike Miradouro de São Lourenço

Pick a cooler day for the hike to Miradouro de São Lourenço, as there’s no shade. The views are spectacular, but be prepared for the sun. Afterwards, you can have a swim at the nearby beach Machico.

Day 9-10: Explore More of Funchal

Spend your last day in Funchal ticking off any remaining attractions you haven’t yet visited. Enjoy the city’s charm and maybe revisit your favorite spots.

  • Akua: specialises in Fish, make sure to make reservations!
  • Campo: has a lovely menu in the center of Funchal
  • Snack bar avista navio: for a brunch with a view on the north side of the island
  • restaurante Lavrador Sao vincente: taste one of the typical skewers
  • Abrigo do Poiso: try the typical espada com banana
  • Leme Marisqueira: have a view over the harbour of Calheta while you are eating
