Why going to Porto for a city trip with your baby
Choosing our first city trip destination with our baby was a tough decision, but ultimately, Porto stood out. Despite never having visited before, our experiences in other parts of Portugal assured us of its reputation as a welcoming city for families with children. Follow along as we delve into Porto’s stunning interiors at Serralves, enjoy a relaxing boat ride along the river, stroll across the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge for charming city views, and explore unique stores like Livraria Lello and The Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardines. Top it all off with delightful seafood dining experiences and immerse yourself in Portugal’s warm culture that embraces children. We had an amazing time and are thrilled we chose Porto for our very first city trip with our little one!
Day 1: Exploring the Heart of Porto and a Scenic Stroll
Arrival and Settling In, have brunch
Check into your family-friendly accommodation. Opt for a centrally located hotel or apartment to make it easier to return for naps or breaks. We asked for a baby cot at the airbnb which helps with carrying less stuff.
Enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant serving traditional Portuguese dishes. Many local spots offer high chairs and are welcoming to families. Read below for the best restaurants.
Afternoon: Stroll Across the Bridge & relax by the water
Walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia. The walk offers beautiful views and plenty of photo opportunities.
Spend the late afternoon strolling along the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. There are plenty of places to sit and relax, let your baby enjoy the fresh air, and take in the sights. Explore The Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardines, a vibrant food store that resembles a toy shop for food lovers. Your baby will love to look at all the colours!
Nearby, along the waterfront, discover Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau, where you can sample delicious Pastel de Bacalhau—a fried rice ball with fish, a local delicacy. Don’t miss the charming interior which consists of a collection of old books inside the store as well.
Evening: Porto Tasting or watch the sunset from jardim do Morro
Visit one of Vila Nova de Gaia’s wine cellars for a Porto wine tasting. These venues are often welcoming to families with babies and offer non-alcoholic choices too. Alternatively, you can enjoy the sunset over Porto from Jardim do Morro.
Day 2: Gardens, Art and a boattrip
Morning: Fundação Serralves
Spend the morning at Fundação Serralves, where you can explore the beautiful gardens and contemporary art museum. The wide, open spaces and beautiful surroundings are perfect for a leisurely walk with a baby stroller. Moreover, besides its impressive art collection, the gardens and architectural design of the building are equally captivating and worth exploring.
Lunch: Picnic in the Gardens
Pack a picnic or grab something from the café at Serralves and enjoy a relaxing lunch in the gardens.
Tip: the gardens are large, make sure you don’t miss the buggyproof treetop walk here!
Afternoon: Boattrip on the Douro River
Take a gentle boat trip on the Douro River. There are several options, including shorter cruises that are perfect for families with young children. The views are stunning, and it’s a relaxing way to see the city from the water.
After the boat trip, find a riverside café for a snack and some relaxation time. Let your baby stretch out and play a little.
Dinner: Riverside Restaurant
Have dinner at a riverside restaurant in Gaia, where you can enjoy the view of Porto lit up at night.
Day 3: Cultural Immersion and Leisurely Walks

Head to Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. The stunning architecture will captivate you. The bookstore looks like the one from beauty and the beast full with these beautiful details carved in wood.
Kidstip: Be sure to carry your baby in a sling or carrier, as strollers are not allowed inside. You can leave them with security. As this is a popular bookstore, there can be a line, try to be here as early as possible!
