Copenhagen is truly a city for everyone—but what surprised us most is just how incredibly child-friendly it is. When we visited, the city was covered in snow and even the canals were frozen, yet we still found that there are a lot of must do’s in Copenhagen with kids. From outdoor highlights to amazing indoor activities, the weather didn’t stop us at all.

The city itself isn’t very large and thanks to the efficient metro system and bike-friendly streets, getting around is easy—even with little ones.
Here are our favorite things to do in Copenhagen with kids:
The Traffic Playground (Trafiklegepladsen)
This was easily one of our favorite spots in Copenhagen. The traffic playground is designed like a mini city where kids can ride bikes, follow traffic lights, and “drive” around safely.

During the day, bikes are available for children to use. Even though it had snowed during our visit, the staff brought out little snow scooters—our toddler had the best time here! As you get some vehicules to play with, this park has opening hours mostly in the week.
Round Tower (Rundetårn)

Climbing the Round Tower is a fun and unique experience for the whole family. Instead of stairs, you walk up a wide spiral ramp—originally designed so horses could reach the top.
This makes it buggy-friendly almost all the way up, and once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with beautiful views over the city.
Amalienborg Palace
Amalienborg is the royal residence and a great place to experience a bit of Danish tradition.
Around noon, you can watch the changing of the guards, which was surprisingly fascinating for our toddler. The nearby promenade along the water is also perfect for a relaxed family stroll.
Kastellet
From Amalienborg, you can easily walk towards Kastellet, one of the best-preserved fortresses in Europe.

It’s a peaceful green park surrounded by water, ideal for letting kids run around while you enjoy the scenery. It’s also a great stop on your way to the Little Mermaid.
The Little Mermaid
No visit to Copenhagen is complete without seeing the famous Little Mermaid statue, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen.

To be honest, our toddler was a bit underwhelmed (he expected the Disney version 😄), but it’s still a fun and iconic stop. The statue has even been rebuilt several times due to vandalism.
Nyhavn
Nyhavn is probably the most photographed spot in Copenhagen—and for good reason.

The colorful houses along the canal create a lively and cheerful atmosphere. It’s a great place to walk around, grab a snack, or simply enjoy the view with kids.
Rosenborg Castle
Rosenborg Castle is surrounded by a beautiful park that’s perfect for a break with children. While the castle itself is stunning from the outside, you can also visit the interior to explore royal treasures—if your kids are up for it.
Freetown Christiania
Christiania is a free-spirited and alternative part of the city, known for its unique atmosphere and street art.

While it used to have a more controversial reputation, the area has changed a lot and is now more accessible for families. It’s fun to walk around and discover creative graffiti and art installations.

Tip: Don’t miss one of the “giants” by Thomas Dambo hidden in the area. If you travel through Denmark, you can find more of his giants.
Explore the City by Bike
Copenhagen is made for cycling, and one of the best ways to explore the city is by renting a bike.
For families, you can rent a cargo bike (bakfiets) with a seat in front for kids. It’s such a fun and easy way to get around, and little ones love the ride.
Shopping Street & LEGO Store
You can’t visit Denmark—the home of LEGO—without stepping into a LEGO store.

The main shopping streets are lively and fun to explore, and the LEGO store is always a hit with kids (and secretly with parents too).
Tivoli Gardens
Tivoli Gardens is a magical amusement park right in the city center.
With rides, lights, and seasonal decorations, it feels like stepping into a fairy tale. It’s suitable for both younger and older kids, making it a perfect family outing. When we were there, it was closed unfortunatly so make sure to check opening hours.
What to Do in Copenhagen with Rainy Weather
Even on rainy or cold days, Copenhagen has plenty to offer for families.
Public Library (Dokk1 / City Libraries)
We were honestly amazed by how beautiful and child-friendly the public libraries are.

They feel more like creative play spaces than traditional libraries, with lots of areas for kids to explore and play in. You’ll see many local families here, especially with babies and toddlers. We spend her almost half a day and really had to drag our toddler out.
Experimentarium
The Experimentarium is an interactive science museum where kids can learn through play.

It’s a true paradise for curious minds, with hands-on experiments and exhibits. You can easily spend an entire day here—and still not see everything.
Natural History Museum
This museum offers a great mix of learning and play, with areas designed especially for children.

Kids can explore historical settings and interact with exhibits, making it both fun and educational.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Just outside Copenhagen, the Louisiana Museum is definitely worth the short train ride.

The setting itself is stunning, overlooking the sea, and there’s a dedicated children’s wing where kids can create art or build with LEGO.

Christiansborg Palace
Located right in the heart of Copenhagen, Christiansborg Palace is one of the most important buildings in Denmark. It houses the Danish Parliament, the Supreme Court, and royal reception rooms—all in one place.

For families, the wide open square in front of the palace is perfect for kids to run around while you admire the grand architecture. Inside, you can explore parts of the palace, including the royal reception rooms and even the ruins beneath the building, which feel like a little adventure on their own.

Tip: Climb the tower for free—yes, really! It offers one of the best panoramic views over Copenhagen and is a fun (and budget-friendly) activity with kids.
What Else to Do in Copenhagen with Kids
If you have more time (or better weather), here are a few extra ideas:
- Botanical Garden – beautiful greenhouses and nature
- Ku.Be – an indoor activity space with climbing and play zones
- Danish Architecture Center – features a giant slide kids will love
- ByOasen – a small city farm where kids can meet animals
- Superkilen Park – a colorful urban playground
- Reffen Streetfood – food trucks with a playground nearby
- Frederiksborg Castle – a fairy-tale castle just outside the city
