Things to do in Franschhoek with kids

Just a few hours away from the bustling city of Cape Town, Franschhoek feels like a complete escape from it all. We spent nearly four days in this charming little town and fell so in love with it that we could easily envision ourselves living there. This guide gives you an overview of what to do in the wine region, Franschhoek, with kids

Activities to do on a long weekend or 3 / 4 days:

Wine Tram

Experience the unique views as the tram weaves between vineyard rows, stopping at different wineries along the way. There are seven lines, each with a different focus. However, some lines were sold out, so if you prefer a specific line, make sure to book your tickets in advance. Alternatively, you can go early in the morning to buy your tickets.

Kidtip: Pick a line that has kidfriendly wineries that you can visit.
Kidtip: You can bring along a pram, just make sure you can collapse it so it fits on the tram. It is convenient as for us, our little baby could do his nap during a wine visit.

Pigcasso

It’s hard to put into words just how unique Pigcasso is. As the name suggests, this sanctuary for rescued animals is home to a very special resident: Pigcasso, the painting pig. That’s right, a pig who paints! At Pigcasso’s sanctuary, you can witness this extraordinary talent firsthand with an exhibition of Pigcasso’s artwork. Alongside the artistic pig, you’ll also have the chance to meet other rescued animals, giving the experience a farm-like feel. And ofcourse, Pigcasso’s sanctuary is also a winery!

Picnic

Amidst the Wineries: Opt for a relaxing picnic in the sun between winery visits. We chose Holden Manz for our picnic and were delighted by the delicious spread they provided, complete with blankets and pillows for comfortable seating. Our little one had a blast playing on the blanket with the empty food packaging. Luckily, toys can be found everywhere when you’re a kid!

Boschendal

This estate is a destination in itself, offering a range of activities to fill an entire day. Explore galleries, interact with farm animals, wander through a garden filled with exotic spices and plants, enjoy a leisurely lunch, and sample wines.

Maison Chefs Warehouse

Indulge in a culinary experience at Maison Chefs Warehouse, a must-visit eatery in South Africa. While it may be part of a chain, each location offers a unique dining experience. Plus, the view from the terrace is beautiful.

Village Market

On the Main Square or Park: Take advantage of the village market located on the main square or in the park. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy local cuisine, browse handmade goods, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.

Overall, you can spend more or less time here, but for us, we took it slow to relax a bit and to have a better pace with the baby. This guide provides you with an overview of things to do in Franschhoek with kids, making it easier to plan a leisurely and enjoyable experience for the whole family.
